The fan still forces air to circulate across the face of the radiator, even
with the other side blocked. I think you'll get noticeably different
results if you put the cardboard between the radiator and fan (with suitable
reinforcement to be sure it doesn't get sucked into the fan).
I do know my TR3A with electric fan only will get hot even in 0C
temperatures with the fan off. It actually boiled once on the local club's
"Y2K don't bug me" drive on Jan 1 2000, before I remembered to turn the fan
on.
