This is a late reply to the recent speedometer thread. While catching up with a week old digest, there was a post about the innards of the speedo and causes of wild needle swinging. I tore mine apart about 15 years ago and found tiny bits of 'metal' stuck to the rotating cup. Every once in a while, the needle would peg over to full scale, then settle back to normal.
