Hi Guys,
A while back, when I first messed with my friends Herald, which I am now
proud to call my own, she too had a leaky fuel pump top gasket. At that
point, we pulled the cap off, and cleaned the gasket, flipped it over, and
put the top back on. As I tightened it, my wrench tapped the clutch
line...And for some strange reason, this caused a spark. (As I was not
working on electrics, and fuzzy thinking was being used, the power was not
disconnected) Well, this spark had a purpose. It just happened to ignite the
fuel which had spilled out the leaking fuel pump cap, and run down the side
of the engine. Now having a small scale fire going(flames three feet
straight up) my friend, the then owner of the car, proceeded to stare, open
jawed, and point, mumbling "fire...water...fire..." I ran back to my car,
pulled out the extinguisher kept on hand for "juss such an e-mujency" and
put the conflagration to rest with a quick shot. This acted to seal the lid
very well- though I don't recommend this trick for any reason!
I am still trying to figure out why that sparked, and, why the clutch line
gets hot when cranking the engine...
