Would someone please tell me how an electric fan pulls power away from the
engine???

Sure it requires power to run, but that alternator is running all the time
anyway. The electricity is coming from the battery and
being replenished by the alternator. The only effect that running an electric
fan has on the engine (as far as I can see) is that a
large power drain might steal some power from the ignition system.

I'm all ears!!!

Joe ,I will leave that one to Dan, but as far as I know only the excess
current is going to the battery and Dan can advise about
freewheeling of the alternator and consequences .
A few years ago I fitted a electric fan to my TR6 coming straigt
from a Citroen BX, its very cheap ,very powerfull and easy to fit.I
must say I never had major problems with overheating before, more
with undercooling during 10 month of the year ,and I did not want to
change thermostats every season .So I put a fan in front of the
radiator and an oil cooler behind. Fan is controlled by a thermostat
switch located in the radiator at the place of the drain valve and an
override switch is mounted in the central console. I chose to fit the
oilcooler behind the radiator because its again easy fit on the
crossbar and no problems with the oil lines around the radiator.
As the oil temperature is anyhow higher than the coolant temp. no
inline themostat is needed and all stays well in its parameters. In
addition the coolant warming up faster is bringing the oil quicker to
operating temperature.
One more reason to fit the electric fan were problems I had with the
cam chain cover oil seal. After the seal had been replaced 3 times
and still leaked I decided to leave it that way. The big problem was
that the original fan distributed all that oil nicely and evenly all over
the engine compartment and I had to look for a way to tackle this
problem differently. The electric fan solved that problem and now
every thing remains clean and neat, I would say by redressing one
situation I received as a spin off a nice and clean engine room.
