Thanks for the quick response.  I hadn't considered a broken tire belt. 
This point could make some sense because I have old bias ply tires.  I
suppose I can get new tires; there was a discussion thread running last week
aboout good tires for TR3's.  I guess I kind of liked having non-radial
tires to tie into the cache of an old car.
