The friction may be an important part of the design, for a big truck.

On a car, the leaves are normally lubricated.  To quote from the TR2/3
factory manual assembly instructions : "Grease the blades with a
graphite grease, particularly at the ends where one blade contacts the
blade above".  The maintenance instructions also say to paint the
assembled springs with used engine or gear oil every 6000 miles.
