Another thing to check while looking at the top end of the motor...
The tappet buckets wear top and bottom and therefore become barrel shaped,
which causes them to stick in their bores and therefore cause a loud tick at
startup. I assume they are the same as those in the Stag - Use a micrometer
to measure them top and bottom - they should measure no less than 1.310"
across and even that is marginal. The normal width is 1.313". For some
reason the hard steel wears in the alloy bore that they go up and down in,
which is softer, so the bore should be fine.
When you replace the buckets, you will more than likely need to replace the
shims as well - a fiddly job, but the resultant quietness is worth it.
