I had the opportunity in November to look at a '72 TR6 (and a '73 (?) parts
car) for sale locally, and did not pursue it any further due to my then busy
schedule. I assumed the cars had sold (he wanted $1500 for the pair), but
the gentleman who was selling the cars recently contacted me again about
them saying they are still available (he needs the garage space for the
Triumph motorcycles he works on). The '72 was in decent shape, with some
visible rust in the rear fenders above the taillight lenses, at the rear
lower edges of the front fenders, around the headlights, and some small
patchable holes in the floor pans. The paint was faded, and the car would
need a repaint after the body work was completed. The car started and ran OK
(it has been sitting for a few years), but it had a couple of flat redlines
so I could not take it for a spin. The interior was intact and all there,
but would probably need a total replacement (at least the carpets and panels
needed replaced). The owner had restored the wood dash, and it looked quite
good. It also had a factory hardtop painted the same Siena brown as the car
with good glass, but the headliner had water stains. The car had previous
frame rust, but it had been repaired properly, and looked very sound from my
inspection and probing. The '73 (?) parts car is barely even that, and had
not been on the road since the late '70s. It has no front sheetmetal, and
possibly one salvageable rear fender and boot lid. But the drivetrain is
complete and appears to be in good shape (motor spins freely), as is the
suspension. Another '70 engine is also included in the deal. If I do buy
this TR6, I plan on doing most if not all of the body and interior work
myself (I have some experience from restoring my MGB, and have a MIG for
welding). Basically, it looks like I can get the package deal for
$800-$1000. Should I go for it? Thanks for any opinions.
