I came across an article written by Jeff McNeal (
http://www.ohms.com/spitfire/radio.shtml#radio)that provided every detail
on performing a restoration and conversion of a TR radio. Be forewarned
that this is not for the price conscience. An average conversion will run
$450, versus a basic servicing around $75. If you do go ahead with it your
radio will be better than the day it was made.
Antique Automobile Radio (www.antiqueautomobileradio.com) in Palm Harbor,
FL is the manufacturer of specialty boards and the foremost restorer of car
radios, but may service some Triumph units. Their website does list other
dealers which will convert radios which may be closer to home. In the
Northeast, Will Wilkes <euroradio@iqnetsys.net> was highly recommended.
Also Gary E. Tayman of Tayman Electrical (http://www.gate.net/~gtayman)
does excellent work.
Something to keep in mind is that while the original radios look really
quite nice, this is a expensive route to travel. Your radio housing may not
be able to store all the options you may want to include.
Some possible, but not all, features are:
Stereo, with a choice of 2 or 4 speaker systems
up to 88 watts RMS total output power (4x22watts)
All original functions are fully operational
Does not require a remote control to access features
Eliminates all tubes, the vibrator, heavy power transformers.
"CD ready for RF or wired trunk unit
