I don't normally write to the lists, and of late, I haven't had much time to
lurk - the reason?
About three months ago, on a dark and drizzly night, the Stag ran hot, the
cause, it turned out, was the water pump gear and its equivalent on the
jackshaft had stripped. What ensued was a complete motor rebuild.
There were a few challenges along the way - the descending value of the New
Zealand $ was one of the major ones, especially when it came to importing
good parts. While I was about it, I had the engine balanced and I fitted an
oil cooler (supplied by John Rossi) and that is working wonderfully.
Members of the Stag club here in NZ have given a lot of good advice and I
have gone through the archives as well. I learnt a lot of tricks, skinned
the odd knuckle and made the odd mistake (the most embarrasing being to fit
the distributor 1800 out), but it was worth it. The machinist I chose for
the crank grind, headwork etc, has done a wonderful job and I am pleased to
say the motor sounds really nice. I plan on it staying this way for many
years...
Summer is just around the corner and my goal was to have the car on the road
before then. I made it - just...
