Ther is a device called a "Re-Nu Thread Insert". It is a solid insert, unlike the helicoil, and has a locking element on the OD to lock it in the hole once it is installed. They are available from J&L Industrial Supply, 1-800-521-9520. I urge you to persist with repairing the existing holes by using something like this.
