Obviously, a whack is what you apply to get it back into whack. aka

I suspect the term became popular during the early days of radio and
television. We had a Zenith (strained LBC content) TV for some years that had
to be occasionally whacked. We graduated from a gentle rap of the knuckles to
a full swing blow of the fist before it finally gave up the ghost ...
