I am in the final stages of my rebuild now and thought I might pass
this one on for what its worth. Without doubt the most difficult
aspect of rebuilding one of these boxes is the removal and
replacement of the circlip on the main shaft. Removing it I found it
easiest to lever underneath it with a suitable screwdriver or two,
then when presented with enough of the surface I simply cut it in two
with my junior hacksaw, with no injury to the shaft. Replacement of
the new clip, after much trial and error, worked best by filing with
a triangle needle file, two very small slots, at each open end of the
circlip. This a allowed a good purchase with my outside circlip
pliers, prior to filing this tool could not grip and would slip as
soon as any leverage was applied, due of course to the fact it is
designed to fit into the holes supplied on the normal circlip. These
two small slots give grip straight away and the circlip was in place
with no banging, levering in a matter of seconds.
