all 4 gears - I suspect because the inhibitor switch is bypassed or
faulty. To do this I need to remove the cover over the
gearbox/overdrive. My book says something like 'break the seal and lift
off the cover' (after many other stage). My questions is - what forms
this seal, and what can I use to re-form it? Will a gasket sealant do,
or do I need something else?

Paul,

They are just soft rubber seals but after 25 odd yeas they will stick
pretty good to both the cover and the floorboards and you run a good chance
of tearing them. So go slowly and carefully when doing this. Re-assembly
is just aligning everything up and setting all the bolts. There is no
gasket sealer.

Dave
