I have purchased gasket sets and head gaskets from Moss, Victoria British,
and TRF this year. All stock head gaskets have been of the sandwich variety.

All gasket sets I have purchased in the last year have had steel Figure 8
gaskets, .015 thick, plated with a bright finish for corrosion resistance.

Specifications for liner protrusion is .004 - .006. This works fine for the
stock sandwich head gasket.

If you use the steel shim head gasket instead, to increase compression ratio,
.004 to .006 protrusion is often too much for these old blocks, which are the
problem area (heads can be refaced, blocks cannot unless liners are also
re-machined). Cementing or soldering soft copper wire of .010 in the grooves
does help. If there is a problem with too little protrusion, and if you are
using a stock head gasket, cementing or soldering a .010 wire to the gasket
where it meets the liner usually works.
