Well,
If you weren't there - WHY NOT??
I always wait 'till mjb goes off to a VTR before I blast one of these
babies out there... I hope the server survives! If not - apologies in advance.
I'll offer a brief overview:
1. registration folks were really nice - and patient. Somehow my
registration never got to them! But they were able to accomodate me really
well. Cash talks.
2. There were about 120 registrants.
3. The tour to Monticello/Michie Tavern was a blast. It rained a bit, but
that's okay. The rumors are true - about TJ and Sally H., that is. The
lunch/dinner at MT was awesome. I was the last car to leave MT.
4. The restaurant tour was a blast. Some folks got a view of Sir Anthony
Perkins at the capitol building in downtown Richmond. It was an intersting
contrast seeing a statue of Arthur Ashe and Jefferson Davis along Monument
Ave (or whatever the street was called). Don't order a salad plate at the
restaurant called Carnivores - the one at our table never showed up! Marty
Jones and his wife were very entertaining company at the restaurant.
5. Jimmy's was a cool local hangout for breakfast. I wound up going there 4
times, I think. MMMMMMmmmm MMMM.
6. The autocross was a blast. John Lye set up an interesting course that
was a bit too tight for his car. We _killed_ several pylons. FTD - John
Lye. Triumphs list members all did quite well, I got a second place behind
Richard Good in the ML class. That's what I get for showing him how to use
his Hoosier radials! ;-) But the fun runs were awesome... I got to take the
Lye-mobile for a quick spin... YEEEE- HA!
7. BBQ dinner was great. Nice spread.
8. Lot's-o-deals at the Auction. Free beer seemed to help the bids get a
little higher.
9. Folks got _lost_ on the fun rallye.
10. There were no fatalities reported during the TSD.
11. Car show was awesome. I believe a Sports 6 got a 400 point score for
best of show in the concours. Nice car! But it must've been tough to not
give the TR2 owned by Jack & Carol Schmelyun the award. Another really nice
car. There was a "brace" of four really nice TR250's - I think they were
all just about perfect. Then the usual TR6's with all the "factory options"
and that sort of stuff. John Lye's car looked great in Modified concours. I
don't think I got any votes for my car... I was parked next to Concours Dan
Ferris's TR6 in P.C. Oh well. I never got to see about half the cars - I
wound up parking my butt under a tree and eating a lot. I had a blast.
12. Dennis Culligan was having tranny problems.
13. When we were getting ready to leave, there was a Model T convention
coming in. I stayed an extra day - there were more Model T's than there had
been Triumphs. This was an unexpected treat.
14. With the exception of I-81, I-95 (and derivatives) and I-64, I don't
think there's a bad Triumph driving road in the state. Lot's of great driving.
15. I racked up about 2100 miles from Boston - Richmond - Boston via
Skyline Drive, Lancaster (PA) County and the Catskills, Colonial
Williamsburg (although not in that order)... a very serpentine path. Only
had one tail-lamp fail as far as mechanical woes.
16. The banquet was good. Pat Goss (the keynote) bailed at the last minute.
What a stiff! They had a "stiffness" of him (replete with event t-shirt) on
the stage for the banquet. I don't watch AutoWeek anymore.
17. GT Classics is in Stannardsville, VA. Easy to find if you let
serendipity guide you.
18. It is actually possible to drive from Richmond, VA up to New Market, VA
and actually travel over 200 miles even though the linear distance is about
120 miles. Note: VA county road 810 from Stanardsville to Verona through
White Hall was a blast!
19. I actually paid $1.43 for unleaded regular near Lone Oak, VA!
