Most auto trim shops or boat trim shops will carry the material. At a boating
trim shop the sheet size may be quite a bit larger than at an auto trim shop (on
the other hand the boat trim shop may have a relatively small sized scrap
(relative to what is used on boats) for real cheap). I have not purchased a
sheet of window vinyl from an auto trim shop in 13 years - now I just go down to
our protoshop at work and get a piece.
A bit of advice in regards to sewing in the vinyl window onto the old top. Cut
out the old window where the clear portion and the top fabric meet (do not cut
away the old dielectric bond line). Cut your new window about 3/8 wider on the
entire perimeter for sewing. For OEM prototype tops (unable to dielectric bond
the vinyl to the top) that are intended to remain watertight, two sided transfer
tape ( colloquial shop name: "snot tape") is placed between the top and the new
window and sewn thru. A home sewing machine many not have the power sew thru
two layers of vinyl much less the additional drag of sewing thru the transfer
tape. I had the windows replaced on my Spit custom made fabric top last spring
and we used the two sided tape and I have not experienced any water leakage.
......Does anyone know of a mail order source for the plastic material used in
convertible top windows?
One of my LBC's has a rip in one of the windows and I think I could put in
another one using my wife's sewing machine if I could get some of the
plastic.
