Thanks to all who replied to my query about trans removal. (Especially Bud and Cliff) I shall share the wealth: Seems the drive shaft does NOT have to be removed. Removal of the four bolts fastening the output flange of the gearbox to the driveshaft is required, then the shaft slides back on its splines to the rear of the car, leaving sufficient space to pull the gearbox rearward and clear the trans input shaft.
