That's not "odd banking practices", that's a rip-off !

It might be true that a cashier's check takes a little longer to clear,
although I doubt it.  However, it is drawn against the banking
institution that you bought it from, and guaranteed by the federal
government to be good !  There is absolutely no legitimate reason for
your vendor to wait for it to clear (except perhaps he didn't really
have the parts and had to wait for them to come in from TRF <g>).
