There should be two wires to the positive side of the coil since it is a
ballasted coil.  One wire is the ballast wire (tan or pink.  after all
these years the color fades) and has a woven insulation.  The other wire is
the "Start" wire from the start relay (or solenoid, depending on the year. 
I forget which on the 74)  However, it sounds like you have solved the
electrical problem.
