Well, the TR3 came home last night not under its own power for the first
time since I got it.
You folks may remember the fuel related problem I had last February. It
was due to the DPO using silicone sealant to seal up the fuel sender in the
tank and some of the excess oozed into the tank and was taken up by the
fuel line which promptly plugged up.
It was, as it turns out, the tip of the iceberg. When an owner is proned
to bodge repairs he usually doesn't stop with one. We discovered last
night that most all of the fuel in the tank had leaked out throught the
fuel pump. Thinking that it was the intake fitting that had shaken loose I
tightened it up and headed off to the petrol station for a refill. Didn't
make it. By about a block. Pushed it in and put in 7 gallons (US) and
attempted to prime the pump. When that failed I discovered that the fuel
line ad sucked up another chunk of silicone so I wipped out my 7 feet of
5/16 fuel line and 3 feet of 5/16 copper tubing I keep in the trunk for
just such occasions and hooked it up to the fuel pump (please note: even
with 7 gallons (US) in the tank there was no flow from the supply line when
I pulled it off) and attempted to prime again.
No good. Wouldn't pull fuel over the high point in the fuel line (the fuel
filler on the rear scuttle). I started looking further and found stuff in
the sediment bowl. Took it off and found that instead of the proper cork
gasket there was a non-descript piece of home made rubber gasket that was
all swollen up and cut that was intended as the sediment bowl gasket.
And to add insult to injury, there is a bunch of red silicone on the fuel
pump attachment to the engine and the pump output fitting was
cross-threaded.
Who knows what else is bodged up on this car (besides all the other stuff I
have already found).
Some people ought to be shot!
