Greetings. Recently, I swapped my Monza exhaust out for a more stock-like
approach because although the engine sounded great, the volume was just too
loud for my tastes. I replaced the Monza with a Thrush turbo muffler with a
2" opening and just ran new pipe straight from the front pipe to the
muffler. I skipped the intermediate silencer that fits under the
driveshaft, thinking that it would provide me a bit better breathing and a
bit more resonance. While the Monza was too loud for me, I certainly didn't
want something whisper quiet, either. Something inbetween. Well, the
surprise was that not only is the new muffler too quiet, I'm noticing a
decrease in performance -- not much -- but enough to bother me. I've been
contemplating going back to the shop and having them take off the Thrush and
replace it with a mid-sized glass pack, but then I saw something in a Monza
ad that made me curious -- and this is what I need the advice on...
The object that looks like an intermediate muffler or glass pack on the
Monza system is apparently not a muffler at all, but rather a
"non-restrictive expansion chamber". What are the physics involved here?
What does this chamber actually do? Would I be able to reclaim the loss in
performance and maybe a throatier rumble by inserting something like this
under the driveshaft where I have straight pipe now? Or would I be better
off just replacing the current muffler with a glass pack? Remember, I'm
looking for sound somewhere inbetween Monza and quiet, but performance is
very important to me.
