TR6 (and 4) windshield chrome

We've had a nice discussion on the chrome piece and shrinkage problem, 
but what are the tricks to installing the plastic chrome strip.  The 
rubber part seems to be in good condition, but I can't get it to spread 
enough to insert the chrome.  Is it not warm enough yet? Is there a 
"spreading tool" available? Is there a lubricant that would help?  As 
usual, thanks in advance.
