Hi Dave,
I've been investigating this issue, here in the US, with the same staked UJ
on my Mk1 Stag. Most people don't want to touch them. One guy on the Stag
list had them removed and new ones tacked in with small welds from a drive
line shop in the East Coast. He said they were fine. The drive line shop
said that many old BMWs and Merc. used the staked UJs My local drive line
shop doesn't advice that idea. My drive line guy said that the half shafts
can be machined and the UJs replaced with new ones with circlips for $500.
Ouch!
The best bet is to second source Mk2 half shafts, or go to the usual Stag
specialists for replacements. Again $500 or so.
If you want more info, please e-mail.
If you can post this question on the stag digest, you'll get more help.

Hi all,
On behalf of a net impaired TDC member, has anyone with a STAG ever been
able to replace their rear axle u joints on their own? They appear to be
swaged in place on Herb's car. He noticed the inner part is same as TR6 and
would like to retrofit if possible the circlip style u joint
Help ???
TIA
