Tom,
My TR3B (TCF720L) is far from original. It had been recovered in black vinyl
by some DPO, and there were a couple of those clips left holding it on in
parts. After stripping that and some underlying foam off, I ran across what
appears to be the original "fused vinyl" covering. At first I was not sure
if it was vinyl or just a thick coat of paint. My hunch is that is the
original covering of mine, and if it is covered with that, there would sure
be no need for any clips.
I forgot who asked the original question as part of the current work. Two
comments to whoever that was:
1) gasket remover helped get that "fused" layer off of mine, although still
in small pieces with a paint scraper.
2) I ended up taking the new leather kit from TRF and my cleaned and painted
dash to a professional for re-covering. They did an excellent job, and it
currently doesn't need clips to hold the new covering on. They said with the
adhesive they use it won't need it later either.
