My inclination is that it should be removed before proceeding. See comments
below.

Subject: TR-3A dash recovering

In the process of restoring my '61 TR-3A, it's time to recover the dash. I
have obtained the appropriate amount of vinyl to do the job, but have a few
questions:
1) The covering (I think it's factory) on the dash now is on pretty good (I
mean really good !). Any tips on how to reasonably remove it?

I vaguely remember using some kind of stripper chemical. Needs to get under
the vinyl to break down the adhesion. Mine wasn't on real "tight" so I was
able to soak it and pull it off. Check at the local hardware store for
wall vinyl remover. It isn't as thick, but might do the trick. Ask them
about what will strip heavier vinyl applications. Be sure to use heavy duty
rubber gloves that the chemical wont either go through or damage.

Start from the edges that are rolled underneath. Pull them loose and
around to the front side all the way around the dash. Also from inside of
the gauge holes; fascia opening; and cubby door opening.

At this point you may have to take it off in strips (lengthwise). If
necessary keep applying the stripper along the underside of the section you
are pulling. Work slowly and don't tear anything off unless you have a
re-grip section to grap hold of. ie - keep a fresh edge curled up so that
you can have something to pull on for the next section.

2) If it really is on permanently, can I just install the new vinyl over the
original factory covering?

I wouldn't. 1) it might not really adhere like it should; 2) the effort to
pull and stretch around the edges might be more difficult; and 3) the
texture of the old vinyl may show through the new layer causing an unusual
appearance.

3) What kind of adhesive do I use for installing the new vinyl - either over
the old covering, or on the bare dash, assuming I can get the old stuff off?

3M makes an upholstery adhesive that worked great. Comes in two strengths -
regular and heavy duty. Pick it up at a hardware store. It is available
from Moss & TRF but you pay a premium

Thanks, Dennis
