Hi, Ian

Sounds like you've either got a leaking fuel filter or a miniscule leak from a
pipe which,
heaven forbid might be showing its dislike for unleaded after many years of 4
star. Have a
look at the seal round the fuel filter bowl and check the hoses very carefully.
I think
the best method is as follows:

1 Isolate the battery
2. Disconnect electrical feed to pump.
3. Firmly clamp fuel feed from tank to low pressure fuel inlet to filter.
4. Take out filter. In fact, it might be better to get a new one anyway - CAV
7111296 or
equivalent. The bolt to remove it is under the bottom of the filter bowl. When
you loosen
it, you'll get about a pint or so of petrol all over everywhere, so lots of
rags - and
smoking a fag or using a lighted match at this point is a very silly idea
!!!!!!! Fit new
filter, ensuring the sealing rings fit properly - I think there are two.
5. Unbolt the fuel pump and pressure relief valve assembly as a complete unit.
Once you
can hold them in your hand in broad daylight, you ought to be able to see any
possible
cracking of hoses.
6. Ensure low pressure return from metering unit has a good connection.
7. Check seal around fuel gauge float on tank. It might have dried out or the
gasket has
given up the ghost.
8. Ensure dump pipe to atmosphere is dumping to that area and not to the inside
of the
boot.

Re-assemble, ensuring all the unions are fully tight. hope this helps.

Cheers
John
