Ken,
Rather than tell you what I "would" do, I'll tell you what I "DID" do to
my Mk1 Spitfire.

1. Installed 1500 seats recovered in Houndstooth (much better on the
back and infinitely better in the Arizona sun.)
2. Installed a MkIV Overdrive Tranny (Full Synchro and Keeps the Highway
Revs down)
3. Electronic Ignition (Much more reliable and less maintenance than
points)
4. Electric Fuel pump
5. Alternator
6. Wider wheels and tires
7. 1500 Engine, less all the emissions crap.
8. Hardened valve seats and valves for unleaded fuel
9. Higher compression pistons.
8. Higher gear ratio in the diff.
9. AM/FM Cassette player with speakers mounted in the rear deck (Gotta
have those tunes)!

However, I wouldn't guarantee that with all (or none) of those things
were done, that I wouldn't be left stranded sometime. But that is true
even of a new car. My Brand new 4.3 L V6 engine was completely rebuilt
with less than 5000 miles on it!!!

Proper maintenance will make these cars (even the original ones) perform
as reliably as any modern car. After all when they were new, people
thought nothing of driving them across country!

Regards,
Joe
