Eric et al,

The Spitfire did not have EFI or feedback carbs, so it definitely did
NOT have an 02 sensor!  It just uses the good 'ol Zenith Stromberg
carburetor with water choke.  That, I suspect, is your problem.  Check
to make sure your auto choke isn't sticking partially open.  If it is,
it will completely screw up your mixture and it will be impossible to
lean out the carb sufficiently.  The other thing to check is the
condition of the catalytic converter (or is it even there?) and see if
it is plugged up.  If it has been running rich, this is a distinct
possibility.  Without the converter, your emissions will read as they
did in your post.   It's a soup can sized thing that's bolted just below
the exhaust manifold.
