Thanks to all who responded a couple of weeks ago to my request for
diagnoses of my TR-6 problem, i.e., running for a while followed by
complete shut-down. Some said condenser (replaced that); some said
ignition coil (replaced that); some said overrich mixture (fiddled around
with that). Also replaced the plugs and plug wires. My diagnosis as of
this morning -- sediment in fuel or otherwise clogged fuel filter, or bad
fuel pump.
Actual problem -- loose wire and connector hanging from solenoid and arcing
over to block shorting out the ignition. My brother-in-law found the
problem on a five-minute inspection. (We'd both like to know what that wire
hanging off the solenoid is (was) for though.)
Anyway, the silver lining in all those replacement parts is that the Beast
is running like a demon now, and I've learned a bit about Zenith-Strombergs
in the process.
Owning a TR, I've decided, is more like owning a boat than a (modern) car.
