Getting ready for fall storage on the TR3A, I of course changed the oil &
filter. And yes I got a bit of oil on my hands but hardly enough to justify
all the complaints about purolator can type filters I've read about (access
is from above and the oil drips down hill).

After that, I thought it would be silly to pay somebody else to change the
oil & filter on my regular car and a quick look confirmed that I didn't even
have to jack the car to get at the drain plug or the "modern" spin on filter
(just bought the '97 Subaru this summer so my first oil change). Score 1
for the modern car.

The filter's accessible but it's also pointing straight down and so retains
a half cup of warm oil just inboard of the filter. As I was reaching up to
remove it, of course all this oil ran DOWN my arm. Score 1 for the Triumph.

As I was putting on the new "modern" spin on filter, I dipped it in the
waste oil to moisten the rubber seal. Un-noticed by me the seal fell off
into the oil! So I add 4 litres, and pull the car out onto the street to
check the level (as my driveway's not). Of course all the new clean oil is
pumped out past the "modern" spin on filter. Score: Purolator 2, spin on
1.

So I clean up the mess (peat moss works great for this btw), hop in the
Triumph, buy a new filter (cause I think the one I have must be the wrong
size), take off the faulty one (get oil all down my arm again), notice the
missing seal, etc. etc...

Next year I might refresh the paint on the purolator can while I have it off
but I'm definitely NOT replacing it with a spin on adapter!

Final score Purolator 3, Modern 1
