Bill,
Thanks for the encouragement. I am dealing with Painters Edge out of
Waterbury, Ct. for all of my supplies, They are a PPG distributor and seem
to be quite knowledgeable, so I buy what they tell me. PPG has a metal
cleaner for a pre-wash and then you immediately use a metal conditioner that
leaves a phosphate coating. I found that rubbing the metal with a scotch
bright pad seems to assist in the coating process.
As far a overspray, the HVLP is much better than a conventional gun, but
there is still some overspray. I used grey primer over a grey cement floor
(dampened to keep dust down) and while most dust swept up, there was still a
little left stuck on the cement. You may want to use some type of drop
cloth, plastic can get a little slippery. Also, don't forget that you need
some cross ventilation when spraying, even more so when doing the final
finish. I stuck a fan in the window to exhaust the flow outward and left the
door to he house open with the heat on 72 degrees and a window open at the
far end of the house. Even though it was cool outside, the garage remained
in the high 60's and no fumes or dust entered the house. I may even be able
to paint in the winter using this method.
