I'd just buy a new pair of links. If you let them go loose, they'll cause
wear
on the plate under the springs, and that could be expensive to fix or replace.
Besides, a broken link probably would be a bad thing.
If I interpret the diagrams right, the check straps bolt to the frame, and
limit
the upward movement of the axle. If you don't fit them you may just rub
the tire on the upper inside of the fender, or you may slam the axle
against the body.
Who knows what that might do.
They appear to be just steel straps. Should be an easy find at a junker.
There's a number of TR4s listed on VTR that are parting out. If you've got
a vise, a drill and some muscles you could make your own. Or I imagine
they wouldn't be expensive to have a machine shop or foundry bend for you.
