Tech question: possible trans swaps for a GT6?

Listers,

A fellow club member here in the Dallas area is building a Spit-6 project
and is trying to find a more reliable transmission.  There's an outfit in
New Zealand that offers a conversion kit to adapt a Toyota transmission to
the GT6.

Is it possible to "keep it in the family", using either a TR6 trans or a
TR7/8 5 speed?

Alternatively, is there someone in the US doing a conversion kit using an
trans common here in the states?
