help w/removal of.........

the windshield wiper drives.  Need to remove them from the car for
painting but don't see how to disconnect from the drive motor.  Running
a little gunshy here for breaking things.
Also, the knobs on the dash?  Jeesh.  I see a small pin (is it?) on the
bottom of the knob where it would attach to the shaft for it's control.
What I DON'T see is a screw head on that pin.
Thoughts folks?
