The only restriction on which coil to use is the amount of current that it
draws - excessive current can damage the electronics inside the unit - and
the amount of current that it draws depends on the resistance of the coil
(internal resistance or an external ballast resister). Crane can't know all
the possible coils that are out there and may be used with their module, so
they CTA with generic statements (or at least I think that is their reason).
To be sure, get a copy of their instruction sheets (a current set, mine are
outdated) and see what the minimum required coil resistance is. I seem to
remember it's 2.5 ohms or so, but someone on the list with a recently
purchased Crane unit can correct me if I'm wrong.
The Lucas sports coil I have on my car has 2.6 ohms resistance, so it is
perfectly suited for the Crane module, and meets Cranes requirements for
compatiblilty.
