What did I do? I replaced everything as it came off.

There are two springs. One small which is held in by circlip in shifter
lever. The other is larger and longer and fits over the smaller one. Then
the plastic(I think) and metal circular and curved washers and then the big
metal piece which holds verything in place. If any of these items are out
of place or worn it could be a cause for your problem. Not really a whole
lot to screw up. I assume it didn't do this before? Mine requires very
little push down effort to go into reverse but more like a gentle slap to
the left and up.
