Gary, check to see if perhaps the wire to the points inside the
distributor has frayed insulation; it could be shorting to ground when
the vacuum adv/retard unit moves the breaker plate.
If the wire is OK, check everything else in the ignition system, this
doesn't sound like a problem with the carbs to me.
BTW I once had a bad Bosch Platinum plug that looked textbook perfect
that caused almost the same symptoms in a non-LBC car.
