I finally installed an original luggage rack on my 4A. It seemed to me
that there isn't much support for the trunk hinges... and I feared that
even a mild load on the luggage rack... moving in the wind and thumping
in the bumps... might really distort the body around the boot hinges.
I opened up the boot... uncovered the fuel tank area... and looked for
an answer. There was a simple one... I fashioned a bracket that bolts
to the bottom of each hing and goes out to one of the fuel tank support
brackets... It triangulates the whole area and makes the hinge area
solid as a rock.
If anyone is interested in profile of the bracket I made and some
jpegs... let me know... and I will put them together. With the R&D
done... and a template in hand... anyone with hacksaw, a vise, hammer,
drill, and a grinder or file could make a similar bracket..... though I
bolstered mine with a little tube steel that was welded on... but this
was probably overkill.
