your answer makes good sense to me ... BTW when I measured the oil pump back
in '74 (when I was 18) it was pretty much the same as today (and I lapped
plate back then and now). Someone else wrote that their manual specified you
can expect 200,000 miles of use on them so I may have 50 to 70K left!- if I
could get the hardened guts I think I would change it now though.
The .020 I measured was when I took the outer and inner rotor out of the
casing (but kept together) and measured clearance between inner and outer
rotor as you would while it's in the pump casing. When the inner rotor shaft
is in place inside the case it holds it in a centered position but when you
pull it out there is more slop (hence larger gap reading). It probably is an
irrelevant measurement as all the books I read say you should measure the
inner to outer rotor clearances while they are in the casing.

'64 TR4 since '74 (you certainly got me beat on the '63 since '63 tagline!)
ps; have you ever taken out your pistons? ...when I put the new pistons and
liner set in '74 the new pistons had four rings vs three of the previous set.
Now I need to buy new pistons/rings again as two got coolant damage (seeping
head gasket) and I am concerned about getting the best pistons and rings
(haven't taken liner measurements yet - but initially planning on boring
liners to .020 over). Any ideas on quality pistons/rings?
I think you're right about crank condition - turned it in '74 but in '82 I
just popped in new crank bearings and slipped in a reground cam/lifters when
I redid the head... While I'm at it I may go with the new rubber rear crank
seal ..not convinced it's really neccessary ...but will see as I dig deeper.
Any thoughts on these issues?
ps2; my TR4 has always been registered as a '64 but it has black California
plates with a '63 stamped in the corner- I think it was built in Nov '63
according to the date on top of the windsheild wiper motor casing. My car is
commision CT 22326L Engine CT 22494E and body tub marked 21591 CT. I have
Strombergs and totally open crankcase breathing like the TR3s (no 'y' tube).
Is this close to your car?
