Daniel,
Did you ask TRF what their shipping charges would be, or check in their
catalog or price list. TRF (like Victoria British and Moss) charge shipping
based on the dollar amount of the order, not upon the weight of the parts.
>From $0 to $20 at TRF is $5.00 shipping --- the new VB catalog shows $5.75
for the minimum shipping. Remember, the shipping also includes the handling,
which includes the order processing itself. They have to pay the people to
take the order, find, pick, and pack a very light part the same way they do
a heavier part. Sometimes the shipping by dollar amount seems bad --- on
larger orders it can come out pretty good (especially since TRF doesn't
charge any additional shipping for backorders -- which seems to be about 70%
of what I order from them).
I do agree that the minimum shipping charge seems bad if you just want a
small, cheap part. What I usually do to feel better about it is browse the
catalog --- I generally don't have much trouble finding a few more needed
odds and ends to at least get closer to the high end of the price range for
my shipping amount. That way I feel like I'm paying a lower percentage
anyway, plus I get to save the sales tax too (over 8% in LA).
