I have recently developed some peculiar behavior with my clutch and am
seeking the list's advice.
It seems that when I press the clutch pedal in the clutch releases properly
and I have no complaints about how it works. When I release the pedal to
engage the clutch from a standing start, it seems that I reach a point in
the pedal travel where the release is not "smooth". It's as if something is
binding the engagement mechanism. The clutch _does_ want to engage, but the
upward action of the pedal is very abrupt. From the floor it moves up
smoothly until it reaches the "binding" point. This point is before the
drive engages BTW. When at the binding point, if I try to gently reduce the
force my foot applies to the pedal, it doesn't go up any more until I reduce
my foot pressure a fair amount more. Then it "snaps" back and once in a
while it causes the engine to stall (unless I really give it gas and then
it's just like popping the clutch).
I have no idea what is causing this. If the gearbox is in neutral, the pedal
seems to move up and down smoothly. Also, the clutch has about 4,000 miles
on it (Borg & Beck). The three major parts were replaced (disk, plate &
bearing) as well as a new pin and grade 8 bolt reinforcement. My hydraulics
are rebuilt around the same time although I replaced no parts (other than
seals). The slack has been taken out of the linkage by replacing both yokes,
clevis pins and having the pedal hole filled and re-drilled. My flywheel was
machined when the gearbox was out. I noticed when I got it back that the
"stepped" surface was not stepped anymore (I should have complained about
this but did not at the time). When I first started driving I did not notice
this problem. It is only a recent development.
I am planning on replacing the clutch hydraulics soon but wonder if anyone
can shed any light on what might be causing this in the meantime. Pulling
the gearbox is not the most amusing thing to have to do on these cars...
