Jack,
I read Your answer to Andy, but still say;
So why not fit it hot? As You mentioned it helps cool the system
_after_ the engine is shut off - if wired correctly. That's a
very common design among European cars at least... And provided
the radiator is designed big enough to cope with normal driving
the water thermostat will be the one doing most of the work
adapting to different thermal loads on the engine. It's usually
only in stop'n go traffic and at idle the electric fans run
[and when the air conditioning system forces them to run...].

In my TR8 with its _two_ electric fans the "normal temp" thermo
switch is sitting in the hot end of the radiator, just besides
the inlet from the engine... [The "extremely hot temp" switch
is sitting in the engine itself, at the hottest point of the
[common to both cylinder banks] water jacket. Slightly before
the water thermostat...] The three thermostatic devices have
different working temperature spans;
The water thermostat is fully open at 88C/190F, and the low
speed switch kicks in at 93C/200F [and stops the fans again
when 82C/180F is reached]. To prevent high temperatures/rapid
temperature transients [remember we're talking an all aluminium
engine here...] the high temp switch starts the fans running in
high speed mode when it senses a water temperature of 102C/216F
and above directly in the water jacket...

So my recommendation is that the thermo switch be fitted in the
top, or hot end, of the radiator. And the fan system fed with
power over a live fuse, not via the ignition key...
