Hi Erik,
It's definitely a normal right hand thread. I had to replace the front
seal on my wife's Dolomite 1500 last year (same engine). With the engine
in the car it's an easy job - appropriate socket on a long tommy bar,
wedging the bar against the subframe/chassis. Start the engine, and
switch off when there's a "clang" as the whole lot drops off!
Sorry I can't help with any ideas for doing this on a stand, but at
least you know which way the thread goes,

PS
It was suggested to me that I'd need to heat the nut, but I didn't
want to get a torch anywhere near a fitted engine with seals to melt and
a fuel system primed and waiting!
