Hi Jack (don't ever say that in an airport!)

You didn't say if you had an anti-rattle shim behind the pads. I know
TR3's and 4's use them, I'd assume your car does too. Often referred to
as "anti-squeal" shims. The goop is another product to help prevent the
problem you are noticing. I usually use it in conjunction with the
shims. I've also found a big difference in pads and always buy the best
I can get, seem to seat better and less likely to make various noises.
Finally, it sometimes helps to chanfer the leading edge of the pad, use
a file to put a 1/8 inch 45 degree angle on the leading edge that
contacts the disk. Eventually the disk will wear past this, but it seems
to help them settle in on the disk.

Usually noises like you describe are just bothersome, not indicating a
real problem of concern. However, the pad should be in light contact
with the disk all the time. If not, a noise like you describe might
indicte a sticky piston in one or both of the calipers. To be safe, I'd
check them.
