My Haynes manual has a little chart stating that when (such and such)
valves are fully open, adjust (such and such other) valve clearances.
Does anyone have a simple set of instructions for doing this task? It
would be just like me to overtighten and exhaust valve or something.

Use the "Rule of 13". In other words, when valve 1 is open set
valve 12 (1 + 12 = 13), when valve 5 is open set valve 8 (5 + 8 = 13),
when valve 9 is open set valve 4 (you get the pattern).
I have used this many times and it works fine.
BTW on four cylinder engines use the rule of 9. Also this may not
work for volkswagon envines or Vee engines but most any inline
british engine lends itself to this technique.
