Hi Eileen
There should be a plastic/rubber tube going from the overflow outlet (
under the rad filler cap ) down to an overflow bottle which should be
mounted down beside the radiator. As your engine reaches normal
operating temp, the coolant expands and flows down the tube into the
bottle. As your engine cools, atmospheric pressure pushes the coolant
from the overflow bottle back into the rad. If your overflow bottle is
missing or if the hose is not airtight and it's bottom end is not below
the "cold" level of coolant in the overflow bottle, air instead will be
pushed back into the rad.
If all the parts are there and in good repair, add some coolant to the
overflow bottle and your problem should solve itself.
