Two things to check:

1. Clean all connections at the back of the car to the lights. Remove the
trunk trim pieces, pull each bulb socket, remove bulb, use the Dremel with
wire brush to put a shine on all contacts (socket AND bulb), replace, done.

If 1 doesn't make'em work, try:

2. To check the switch, remove it from car (3/4" wrench I think) and check
continuity when the little rod is fully out. You should have continuity. If
not, take the thing apart and figure out why it doesn't make a circuit. It
is a fairly simple device once you have it all apart. If you do have
continuity and no lights, make sure the switch is adjusted correctly. When
the brake pedal is in its full up position, the little rod should be pushed
in just enough to break the circuit. Once the pedal is pressed down (even a
small amount) the little rod should spring to its full out position closing
the circuit and making the brake lights glow. This adjustment can be changed
by bending the metal tab onto which the switch attaches.

I specified the steps in that order because 1 is easier to do and should be
done anyway (you will likely end up with brighter lights as a result). 2
requires some weird contortioning to see what you are doing in the footwell,
even if you remove the driver's seat (which I would recommend if you don't
remember what the switch mounting is like - it is made of plastic and held
on with a metal nut so be careful with that wrench!).
