Once more I climb the mountain, prostrate myself before the sages and
ask for your help. My SPIT was running GREAAAAT! Put new a air filter
on (K+N) and it made a difference (probably just all that chrome).
Handling greatly improved with new poly bushings on the front stabilizer
bar, new tie rod ends, etc. (Now I know why the SPIT was a class
champion in SCCA competition for so long.) Other than cleaning up
electrical connections, this is all I've done lately.
However, now have developed a cutting out situation where, no matter the
speed, the engine will unexpectedly shut down briefly and then start
back up, with a resultant backfire due to unburnt gas. It will run fine
for awhile and then shut down again. No consistency to when it happens,
any gear, any speed although usually not at idle and not repetitive,
i.e. over and over. I have noticed the tach immediately returns to "0"
when it happens. (Electrical problem?) No strange sounds or smells.
The car has an electric fuel pump and a reasonably new fuel filter.
This may be the culprit also, but not sure.
One of my resource books notes that if a condensor goes bad, the engine
will begin to misfire or run poorly.
Have never experienced this latest quirk before.
Anyone have an idea(s)?
Thanks.
