Over the weekend, Gaydon hosted the Riley Centenary celebrations. Many
beautiful Rileys turned up and Rover even allowed a large number of
participants "to see how they performed" by opening up the test track. For
most of the afternoon, the noise coming over the banking was truly
reminiscent of Brooklands and Castle Donnington before the war.
All that said, the weather was lousy and this kept many cars at home - just
in case the brass got wet. No idea of the attendance figures but it was way
way less than May 31 in people and certainly the cars. A shame, because
Riley, like Triumph, was a Coventry manufacturer. A rumour was circulating
on Sunday morning that at the Gala Dinner the night before, Dr. Walter
Hasselkus (on secondment to Rover from BMW) implied VERY strongly that he
might authorise a new Riley. Whether this will be just a one-off or a
limited edition is not clear. Perhaps a pressure group might be formed for
him to think in a similar direction for Triumph? Who wants to set it up?
